Piper Alpha
Piper Alpha adalah sebuah pelantar pengeluaran minyak terletak di Laut Utara yang dioperasikan oleh Occidental Petroleum (Caledonia) Ltd.[1] Pelantar ini mula mengeluarkan minyak pada tahun 1976,[2] pertama kalinya sebagai sebuah pelantar minyak sebelum ditukarkan menjadi pelantar gas. Satu letupan berlaku yang mengakibatkan kebakaran dan memusnahkan pelantar ini pada 6 Julai, 1988, membunuh 167 orang,[3] dengan hanya 59 orang terselamat. Kiraan kematian termasuk 2 orang anak kapal dari kapal penyelamat.[4] Jumlah kerugian adalah sekitar £1.7 bilion (AS$ 3.4 bilion). Sehingga kini, kemalangan ini masih menjadi malapetaka pelantar luar pantai terburuk di dunia dari segi jumlah kematian dan kesan ke atas industri.[5] Pada masa berlakunya kejadian ini, Piper Alpha menyumbang sekitar 10% daripada jumlah keseluruhan minyak dan gas dari Laut Utara.
Sebuah gereka kecil telah didedikasikan bagi mengingati mangsa-mangsa dalam kejadian ini di Aberdeen dan sebuah arca peringatan juga terdapat di Taman Ros, Taman Hazlehead di Aberdeen. Tiga puluh mayat tidak dapat ditemui.
