Peshmerga

Peshmerga, yang bermaksud Mereka yang menghadapi kematian[1] ialah angkatan tentera wilayah autonomi Kurdistan Iraq. Sejak Tentera Iraq dilarang oleh undang-undang Iraq untuk memasuki Wilayah Kurdistan,[2][3] Peshmerga, bersama dengan anak-anak syarikat sekuriti mereka, bertanggungjawab untuk keselamatan Wilayah Kurdistan.[4][5][6][7] Anak-anak syarikat ini termasuk Asayish (agensi perisikan), Parastin u Zanyarî (membantu agensi perisikan) dan Zeravani (Gendarmerie). Peshmerga mendahului Iraq, bermula sebagai pengawal sempadan sempadan pseudo-ketenteraan yang ketat di bawah Uthmaniyyah dan Safavid dan kemudian berubah kepada pasukan gerila yang terlatih dan disiplin pada abad ke-19.[8]
