Kutipan hadis Musannaf ditakrifkan oleh pengaturan kandungan mereka mengikut topik dan merupakan kategori utama dalam kelas semua karya tersebut. Secara etimologis, musannaf adalah zarah pasif Arab sannafa, yang bermaksud untuk mengatur mengikut bab, dan begitu juga makna literal sesuatu yang diatur secara seksyen . Walaupun penunjukan itu boleh digunakan untuk apa-apa teks yang diperintahkan, dan sesungguhnya telah digunakan berkenaan genre yang berbeza seperti fiqh (iaitu perundangan Islam), dalam praktiknya, ia biasanya digunakan untuk pengumpulan ahadīth.
Banyak hadīth koleksi adalah pelbagai musannaf, termasuk setiap daripada 6 kanun Ahli Sunah Waljamaah. Format yang kurang tipikal ialah kompilasi musnad, di mana kandungan disusun mengikut pemancar asal laporan itu, biasanya seorang sahabat Muhammad.
