Jingoisme

Jingoisme adalah suatu bentuk patriotisme tahap melampau yang terbentuk melalui penggubalan dasar-dasar luar negeri sesebuah negara yang menggiat secara kuat dan agresif.
Istilah ini berasal dari suatu lagu dinukilkan di United Kingdom oleh G. W. Hunt yang sering didendangkan orang ramai selepas khabar Empayar Rusia mahu mengepung Kustantiniyah demi mengawal selat-selat Bosphorus dan Dardanelle terus dari pangkalan mereka di Laut Hitam semasa bertempur dengan kerajaan Uthmaniyah sekitar 1877–8 untuk menaikkan semangat agar dapat mempertahankan jajahan India daripada cengkaman Rusia:[1][2][3]
We don't want to fight, but by Jingo,[a] if we do,
We've got the ships, we've got the men, we've got the money too
We've fought the Bear before, and while we're Britons true
The Russians shall not have Constantinople!("Kami tak mahu bertempur. Tapi kalau kita mahu - ya ampun -

Kata terbitan jingoism diciptakan dari lagu ini oleh George Holyoake, seorang pemikir British, dalam suratnya kepada akhbar Daily News pada 13 March 1878.[4][5][6] Istilah ini kemudiannya tersebar ke Amerika Syarikat pada abad ke-20 merujuk kepada dasar-dasar luar negeri Theodore Roosevelt yang dianggap "jingois"; bahkan dikukuhkan dengan sanggahan beliau dalam akhbar The New York Times pada 23 October 1895 yang menyatakan: "Jika 'jingoisme' yang dimaksudkan mereka adalah dasar yang selari dengan kemahuan warga Amerika Syarikat dihormati hak-hak mereka oleh negara luar, maka kami memang "penjingo" (jingoes)."[7]
