Hongi

Hongi (disebut [ˈhɔŋi terdekat ho.ngi]) adalah cara orang Māori[1] di New Zealand bersapa sesama mereka dengan menekan hidung bersama-sama termasuk juga menyentuh dahi[2] serta berjabat tangan.[3] Ia sering dilakukan dalam menyambut tetamu dalam upacara-upacara rasmi.[1][3]

Kepercayaan

Perlakuan hongi dipercayai sebagai bersatunya nafas (ha) [2][3] antara tuan rumah atau "orang benua" (tangata whenua) yang menyambut dan tetamu (manuhiri) yang disambut sehingga terjalinnya hubungan antara kedua-dua pihak.[3]

Tanggapan ini dipercayai datang semasa penciptaan manusia perempuan yang diceritakan dalam kepercayaanMāori: suatu sosok perempuan diukir dan dibentuk para dewa-dewi dari tanah. Tāne, dewa hutan, merangkul sosok itu dan menghembuskan nafasnya ke dalam lubang hidung sosok ini; sosok ini terbersin lalu menjadi bernyawa, perempuan ini diberi nama Hineahuone.[2][4]
