Definisi

Definisi ialah penyataan makna istilah (perkataan, frasa, atau kumpulan simbol lain).[1][2] Definisi boleh dikelaskan kepada dua kategori besar, definisi intensional (yang cuba memberi makna istilah) dan definisi ekstensif (yang cuba menyenaraikan objek yang digambarkan oleh istilah).[3] Kategori definisi lain yang penting ialah kelas definisi ostensif, yang menyampaikan makna istilah dengan menunjukkan contoh. Istilah mungkin mempunyai banyak pengertian dan pelbagai makna, dan dengan itu memerlukan pelbagai definisi.[4][a]
Dalam matematik, definisi digunakan untuk memberikan makna yang tepat untuk istilah baru, dengan menjelaskan suatu keadaan yang dengan jelas memenuhi syarat istilah matematik itu dan tidak. [5] Definisi dan aksioma membentuk asas di mana semua matematik moden akan dibina.[6]
