Cardinalidae merupakan sekumpulan burung passerine yang boleh ditemui di Amerika Utara dan Amerika Selatan.
Dahulunya, kardinal Amerika Selatan dalam genus Paroaria telah diletakkan dalam famili burung tanager, Thraupidae. Bagaimanapun, analisis DNA ke atas genera Piranga (yang mana termasuk tanager scarlet, tanager musim panas, dan tanager barat), Chlorothraupis, dan Habia memnunjukan hubungan rapatnya dengan famili kardinal.[1] Ia kemudian diletakkan dalam famili ini oleh Persatuan Ornitologika Amerika.[2]
