Cakera protoplanet
Piringan protoplanet atau cakera protoplanet ialah sejenis cakera pertambahan yang terbentuk di sekeliling bintang muda jenis T Tauri atau Herbig-Haro. Istilah "pertambahan" di sini tidak sama dengan pertambahan dalam pembentukan planetesimal.
Planet-planet dalam Sistem Suria pada asalnya terbentuk daripada cakera protoplanet yang beredar mengelilingi Matahari muda. Melalui proses yang melibatkan tarikan graviti, hentaman, dan pertambahan, gumpalan jirim yang kemudiannya menjadi protoplanet telah terbentuk. Protoplanet yang jisimnya cukup besar kemudiannya akan menjadi planet.
Hubungan dengan abiogenesis
Menurut permodelan komputer, molekul organik kompleks yang penting dalam pembentukan kehidupan mungkin terbentuk di piringan protoplanet sebelum pembentukan Bumi.[1] Proses yang sama mungkin terjadi di bintang lain yang memiliki planet.[1]
