Ĉefkomputilo IBM 704

Ĉefkomputilo (angle mainframe)[1] estas potenca komputilo uzata por grandaj informpritraktaj laboroj. Ili estas ĉefe uzataj de registaraj institucioj kaj grandaj kompanioj por taskoj kiel censo, industriaj kaj konsumaj statistikoj, entreprena rimedplanado kaj financa transakciopretigo. Ĉefkomputiloj estas speciale uzataj kiel serviloj en la Tut-Tera Teksaĵo (angle WWW). Ili estas apartaj de superkomputiloj.

La esprimo origine rilatis al la grandaj ŝrankoj kiuj enhavis la procesoron kaj ĉefmemoron de fruaj komputiloj.[2][3] Poste la termino estis uzata por distingi tre grandajn komputilojn disde malpli potencaj ("minikomputiloj" aŭ "personaj komputiloj").
