Telnet estas protokolo por teleregi seancon en malproksima komputilo. Ĝi uzas TCP/IP-pordon 23 por komunikado. Telnet nur ebligas ŝel-eniron, do vi nur povas uzi programojn kun tekstaj uzantinterfacoj. Nuntempe telnet nur malofte estas uzata, ĉar ĝi transportas la pasvorton senĉifre tra la reto. SSH ebligas ĉifratan komunikadon kaj havas pli da ebloj.
Sed ankoraŭ ekzistas aliaj aplikadeblecoj por telnet, ekzemple oni povas uzi diversajn retludojn per telnet aŭ oni povas uzi ĝin por testi servilprogramojn, entajpante komandojn rekte.
