Silfo[1] estas mitologia spirito de aero,[2] elementa feo de aero.[1] La termino originis en la 16a-jarcentaj verkoj de Paracelsus, kiu priskribis silfojn kiel nevideblaj estaĵoj de aero, elementaĵoj el aero.[3]

Ĉar la termino silfo originis ĉe Paracelsus, relative malmultas antaŭ-Paracelsaj legendoj kaj mitologio, kiuj povas esti fidinde asociata kun ĝi, sed grava kvanto da posta literaturo kaj okultismaj verkoj inspiriĝis de tiu ideo. Robert Alfred Vaughan notis ke "la naturaj sed poeziaj fantazioj" de Paracelsus probable faris pli grandan influon super sia epoko kaj postaj ol oni ĝenerale supozas, precipe ĉe la Rozkruculoj, sed ke tra la 18a jarcento ĝi iĝis "maŝinaro por teatraĵoj" kaj "operaj figurantoj kun flugiloj el gazo kaj brilaĵetoj."[4]
