OpenID estas malcentrigita ensalut-teknologio. Por retejoj, kiuj ĝin subtenas, OpenID-uzantoj ne devas memorfiksi apartajn salutnomon kaj pasvorton. Uzanto povas unufoje registriĝi ĉe tiel nomata identec-servilo kaj ricevi unikan nomon (URI) kiun poste eblas uzi ĉe diversaj retejoj sen plia registrado.
Konto ĉe LiveJournal, AOL, Blogger.com, Ipernity kaj multaj aliaj retejoj jam estas OpenID-nomo. Subteno de OpenID estos nepre en Firefox v3.[1] Microsoft laboras por subteni OpenID v2.0 en Windows Vista.
