Wikipedia:TAFI random generation

TAFI random generation

Overview

The Random component is transferable and functional in various namespaces other than the portal one. Please see Template:TAFI Main page for an example. To create randomization this utilizes Template:Random component main namespace, which was created by simply copying the wikicode from Random portal component. The Template:TAFI Main page randomly reads directly from one of 10 subpages:

A similar system can be implemented for the Main page area. It's a turnkey process. The "max=" section on the template's edit page: {{Random component main namespace|max=7|header=|subpage=Main page queue}} is updated per the number of weekly articles, and the subpages are updated accordingly per week. In the event of more than 10, the max can be adjusted and new subpages created accordingly.

Pages within Wikipedia's Main page space will need to be developed for the random generation to occur. The Template:Random component main namespace appears to not be transferable between namespaces via transclusion (e.g. transcluded from Template space to another namespace), so a page such as this just for the Main page space will need to be created. The random generation code needs to be existent as a separate page in Main page space, from which the (e.g.) {{Random component Main page|max=7|header=|subpage=Main page queue}} would read from via transclusion.

The above links appear likely to need re-creation within the Main page space for random generation to occur using this method. Additionally, Template:TAFI Main page/box-header may be usable within this process. Northamerica1000(talk) 07:17, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
