This is a project space for Wikimedian in Residence initiatives with the Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research group (MWLR) of the New Zealand Bioeconomy Science Institute (NZBSI).

In 2025 Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand awarded the MWLR group of NZBSI a grant to fund a part time Wikimedian in Residence position from September 2025 until the end of June 2026. Siobhan Leachman was appointed to this role and began work on the 8th of September. MWLR group staff supporting this project include Dr. Leanne Elder, an expert on digitisation and imaging of natural history content, and Dr. Nick Kirk, an expert in environmental social science and impact assessment.

Background

The MWLR group holds five nationally significant biological collections. These collections play a critical role in furthering the understanding and protection of Aotearoa New Zealand's unique biodiversity as well as supporting sustainable land use. Dr Leanne Elder, on behalf of MWLR, successfully secured grant funding from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) to undertake a project to share MWLR group expertise and content with the Wikiverse via a Wikimedian in Residence position. This Wikimedian in Residence project aims to encourage and facilitate the sharing of knowledge of MWLR group staff as well as the reuse of data and images contained in the biological collections that are under the stewardship of the MWLR group of NZBSI.

Scope

The Wikimedian-in-Residence will collaborate with MWLR staff to achieve the following objectives:
1. Develop a strategy for MWLR group engagement with Wiki platforms.
2. Develop long-term workflows by identifying ways to integrate Wiki content creation into the process of mobilising specimen data.
3. Engage and educate MWLR group staff including facilitating discussions with staff to provide targeted education on:

  • the Wikimedia ecosystem,
  • the impact of data reuse, and
  • Wikimedia’s outreach potential.

The Wikimedian in Residence will also organise uploads of appropriate MWLR sourced data into Wikidata as well as facilitate uploads and enrichment of openly licensed MWLR sourced images and documents and their associated structured data in Wikimedia Commons.
