Globally, cycads are characterized by large, heavy seeds with an outermost fleshy layer (the sarcotesta) that on ripening develops vibrant colors[1].

An apparent contradiction in the ecology of cycad plants is that their seeds are known to be highly poisonous, and yet they seem well adapted for seed dispersal by animals, as shown by their visually conspicuous seed cones and large seeds presented within a brightly colored fleshy “fruit” of sarcotesta[2].

The genus (Macrozamia Miq.) is endemic to mainland Australia with the vast majority of species (c. 36) occurring in the eastern states of Queensland and New South Wales[3].

Azoxyglycosides, with the common aglycone methylazoxymethanol, were analyzed in leaf extracts of 32 cycad species belonging to 10 cycad genera[4].

IUCN RED LIST CATEGORY AND CRITERIA: Least Concern[5].
