The indigenous people known as Kanaka Maoli believe in living life in a sustainable way. They believe that nature is sacred. Do not take what does not belong to you, for example lava rocks. The Hawaiian word for this way of life is "Pono". [2] When Kilauea erupts, the Kanaka Maoli believe this is a demonstration of the sacredness. Rangers are an integral part of keeping the parks history going. Some of the ways they do this is by being taught how to make some traditional Hawaii items. The Kako'i is a tool used for chopping down trees and hulling out the trunks to make canoes. Ki'i, commonly known as wooden tiki statues. Poi, cooked taro root that is eaten. Lei La'i are adornements made of ti leaves along with the gourds used as drums in hula performances are known as ipu heke 'ole.
