The key distinction between misinformation and disinformation is that disinformation is created with the intention to mislead people whereas, misinformation is not necessarily created to cause harm and it is often used as a broader term because it can be difficult to determine the intent behind false information shared. [1] [2]

Misinformation' and disinformation can distort how people understand important public issues, shaping political beliefs, voting behavior, and policy preferences in ways that may ultimately harm democratic decision-making. [3] [4]
