Antonio Torres is one half of the experimental spoken poetry-music duo, Luna. His wife,
Alexis Luna, is the other half. Alexis is the vocalist, performing her own poems, which are often filled with provacative sexual content, disturbing imagery, and passionate renouncements of the greed and ignorance that American capitalist life creates. Antonio provides the backdrop for the dark mood she creates, incorporating everything from melodic acoustic folk to thunderous heavy metal riffs to buzzsaw punk and thrash to blues, psychedlia, speed metal, and everything in between. Luna's signature sound consists of Alexis's impassioned reading, during which she often screams and shouts with pain, and Antonio's guitar over a drum machine beat which is usually created by his distortion pedal, a stompbox, keyboard, or sometimes no drums at all. At some shows, the audience has provided the beats with its clapping. Luna prides itself on being experimantal and no idea or sound seems immune to incorporation into their sound. Antonio has the unique ability to make his acoustic playing sound heavy and ominous, even with no disortion. Alexis takes an equally unorthodox approach to her poetry. She has an uncanny talent for creating poetry that zigzags from explosive, schizophrenic free verse to carefully structured iambic pentameter.
Alexis Luna's first book of poetry, Word Withdrawl is sceduled for release in April 2010. The duo's album of the same name will also be released at that time, along with a DVD of live performances on the flipside of the CD. They plan tour the U.S. in support of their project in July 2010. Luna is originally from Sacramento, CA, and now reside in San Francisco. After deciding that the Sacramento poetry scene was not strong enough to support an experimental act such as theirs. they relocated to New York City, where they encountered the opposite problem: the scene was both too crowded and too . Their first performance was in Sacramento at a cafe called Luna's, owned by Art Luna (no relation to Alexis).
