The Suicide Kid is a 2012 independent Canadian feature film about a a university freshman who stumbles into online fame after a botched suicide attempt goes viral.
Consisting entirely of the video blogs of its main character, The Suicide Kid is a no-budget tragic comedy shot over the course of several years by a team of student filmmakers in Toronto and Ottawa, Canada.
Synopsis
The Suicide Kid' is told entirely through the video-blogs of Timothy Laloom, an awkward university freshman in his first year of film school. The film alternates between two stories that intersect in their middle; videos leading up to Timothy's filmed suicide attempt, and those that follow after the 'suicide' video goes viral.
In the videos prior to his rise to online-infamy, Timothy is having a rough first year. He doesn't fit in with his over-confident, clique obsessed peers and can't tell a Bolex from a Handicam. So when he hits it off with Chloe, a cute girl in his program, its his only lifeline in an otherwise cold and uninviting new environment . Having already started his video blog, Timothy decides to film the process of trying to court his new crush and broadcast it online for the world to see. Chloe naturally, has some issues with this. So do her friends. It all leads to a filmed suicide attempt that hits it big on the internet and changes Timothy's life forever.
Several months later, Timothy is an internet sensation, racking up millions of views per video. He's grown confident and cocky and 'cool'. Online he's found the friends he couldn't keep in real life as thousands of loyal subscribers hang on to his every word. So with his massive fan base firmly in place, he decides to document the creation of his big school thesis film. Naturally, he assumes he'll have a captive and appreciative audience, and naturally, he assumes wrong. When critiques of his film turn out to be too much for Timothy to handle, he lashes out against his viewers, instigating a flame war with the internet that escalates fast.
