Yadom (ยาดม, Thai Inhaler). If we talk about the popular tiny portable item for Thai people, it will have to be only the Thai herbal inhaler known as Ya-Dom. It is very easy to find in any convenience store in Thailand.

Ya-dom is a Thai style aromatherapy. Its benefits are relieve cold symptoms and nasal congestion, vertigo, dizziness, decrease stress and motion sickness.

At present, YaDom is extremely popular especially in the group of middle aged people and elderly people. It has adapted the design and ingredients to attract more teenagers. It has a convenient and portable design for new generation who has little time for relaxing from stress. Besides, people who want to quit cigarettes turn to use inhalers instead. That creates the question, Is YaDom or inhaler dangerous?

Inhaler consists of menthol, camphor, balsam, aromatic oil and others e.g., Peppermint oil, Eucalyptus oil. These ingredients will receive cold sensation in the nasal part and gives the refreshing feeling. But if inhaled these often, it may cause mucous membranes in the nose to get irritated.

Menthol or mint pepper’s appearance is white crystal. It has a cool smell. Their benefits are carminative, cover stomach, has a mild anesthetic effect, reduces swelling of the arteries in the nose and reduces pain. This substance, when exposed to the skin, will cause a cold sensation. But if it is used in high concentrations and consecutively, it may cause effects on the respiratory tract after inhalation and may cause pneumonia.

Camphor has a scaly, shiny white color with a pungent aroma. Camphor is well absorbed by the skin and has a cold sensation as well as menthol. It has an antibacterial and antimicrobial effect. It is used to treat sprains, insect bites and dermatitis. It also stimulates the central nervous system. If camphor is in the hot place, sublimation rate is faster. If it has a high concentration of the camphor in the air, it may affect the health, especially lung and liver.

Balsam is a small flat white or turbid reddish-brown color. It comes from camphor combined with other drugs, but today it is from synthetic substances. Medical properties are relieves dizziness, external treatment of sprains, but may be harmful if inhaled. Balsam is irritating to the respiratory tract. It also stimulates and calms the central nervous system.

Yadom that contain these three main ingredients may irritate the skin. If someone has some disease in the nose, it should be avoided because it may cause damage to the nasal mucosa if inhaled in very high concentration. This inhaler may also cause harm to children.

YaDom can also be addicting because some chemicals such as menthol and camphor are substances that affect the nervous system. But the “addiction” is a habitual form like we rotating the pen. If used properly, it can prevent diseases (Associate Professor Yuwadee WongKraang, 2015).
