• Ed Koch - revision of why he lost election; currently doesn't include controversy over U.S. Senate's intervention in NYC with matching funds of Federal Transportation Bill. Koch wanted the funds used for Westside Highway, U.S. Senate voted to appropriate matching funds for subway reconstruction. NJ Senators Bill Bradley and Frank Lautenberg interceded on behalf of NY (NY senators favored plans for the Westside Highway because of its support by real estate developers who gave major financial support).
  • Also need to include how Ed Koch got famous in his racist intervention in a Queens housing project controlled by Orthodox Jews, where Ed Koch was photographed for the front page of the Village Voice, standing on the steps of the project, holding a sign saying "No Niggers or Spics". In the standoff between the Black and Hispanics that wanted to integrate the Housing Project and the Orthodox Jews that occupied it, Mario Cuomo first gained fame when he was appointed as arbitrator or mediator by then democratic governor _________ blah.
  • Ed Koch also lost the election because of controversies in the awarding of cable contracts, not just with Donald Manes but the Bronx Borough President as well (whatever his name was). In the year or two preceding his loss in the election, a a skycraper was bulldozed by a real estate developer in the middle of the night to circumvent NYC government which had been trying to preserve the building (the building had already received Preservation Status). This was highly illegal and a shock to most Manhattanites. The developer ended paying a relatively small fine for his violation of the law which had made front page headlines. As a result of these controversies beyond the control of mayor Ed Koch, NYC seemed out of control.
