The Summary of the Hobbit By J.R.R Tolkien:
The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, is the prologue to the epic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. The book begins in Hobbiton, a town in the fictional world of Middle Earth. Here lives Bilbo Baggins, a curious Hobbit, a small human like creature who is very fond of pipe weed, good tilled earth and a quite life away from adventure of any kind. Gandalf, a wizard friend of his, visits him one day. The wise wizard is accompanied by thirteen dwarves who are on a mission to re-take Lonely Mountain and the treatures store there by a greedy Dragon who took the mountain from Dwarves long ago. They recruit an unwilling Bilbo to be their “burglar”. The company sets off and not long after, they encounter three large trolls who try to eat them. However, Gandalf tricked the trolls into arguing with each other until dawn, when trolls turn to stone if above ground. They travel on to Rivendell, the realm of the just and powerful Elf, Elrond. After a few days rest the Dwarves, Gandalf and Bilbo travel deeper into the Misty Mountains where, in a cave, Goblins and Orcs, fearsome creatures, captured them. They once again escape with the help of Gandalf. In the deep, dark tunnels, the Dwarves run from the Goblins and Orcs. In the commotion, Bilbo falls and gets knocked out. When he awakes he is alone. Crawling along, he stumbles upon a ring, which he stows in his pocket. Bilbo comes to a large lake in the heart of the mountain where he meets Gollum, a slimy, deceiving creature. Gollum wishes to eat the Hobbit. They agree to play a riddle game, the outcome deciding Bilbo’s fate. Bilbo wins by asking the impossible riddle, “What have I got in my pocket?” Gollum, obviously can’t answer, and is mad that he lost. He decides to eat Bilbo anyway, and goes to get his special ring that will turn him invisible. He can’t find his precious ring and realizes that the ring was the object in Bilbo’s pocket. The ring slips onto the Hobbit’s finger at this moment, and he soon realizes he is invisible. He then follows Gollum to the exit of the mountain and escapes. Bilbo rejoins his friends. That night, the company is attacked by Wargs, wild, evil wolves. They are rescued by Eagles and set down near the house of Beorn, the half man half bear, where they reside for a few days. Gandalf must leave the company at this point to deal with very important matters. The company reaches Mirkwood, a magical forest and after getting attacked by giant spiders, gets captured by Wood Elves. Thanks to Bilbo, they eventually escape in barrels and float all the way down the Forrest River to Lake Town, a town ruled by men. From there, they go on to Lonely Mountain. Using the ring to turn invisible, Bilbo bravely sneaks into Smaug’s layer and, steals a golden cup. When Bilbo comes again, the great Dragon is awake and angry. Bilbo and the Dragon talk and the Hobbit learns about a weak spot in Smaug’s scales. Bilbo gets away and Smaug is so angry that he fly’s out of the Mountain to destroy Lake Town, where he believes Bilbo is living. Bard, a skilled archer who learnt about the weak spot, kills the Dragon but not before he demolishes the town. Now, the men from Lake Town and the Wood Elves, who have tracked their runaway prisoners to the town, want their share of the gold and jewels stored in the mountain. Unfortunately, Thorin, the leader of the Dwarves, refuses their request, so the men and Elves camp outside the mountain with the Dwarves and Bilbo inside. Bilbo, trying to avoid a battle, gives Bard and the King of the Elves a bargaining chip. He gives them the one treasure that Thorin wants most, the Arkenstone. Thorin is furious with him and almost kills the Hobbit, but once again, Gandalf shows up just in time. Then, a huge army of Wargs and Orcs arrive forcing the Elves, Men, and Dwarves to fight along side each other to defeat their common enemy. They defeat the enemy with the help of Beorn and the Eagles. Thorin is fatally wounded, but makes peace with Bilbo before he dies. At the close of the novel, Gandalf and Bilbo, with his two chests of treasure in tow, return to Hobbiton.
