Marcos Chin
is a queer award-winning artist and illustrator who’s worked with large companies such as Starbucks, Apple, The New York Times, and many mediums including (but not limited to) textiles, coloring books, and fashion catalogs.
Biography
Marcos Chin was born in the early 1900s. While he himself is originally from Mozambique, Africa, his family was from southern China but his grandparents moved to Africa in the late 1920s until the mid-1970s because of war. From there his family moved semi-frequently, moving from Lisbon, to Portugal and then Toronto, Canada. Growing up in a working-class family, he did not have family who worked in design or art and so he didn’t consider something as an option to pursue. He even assumed it was mainly an option for those who had money or privilege.
He attended York University’s Fine Arts Department, however, decided that it wasn't a good fit and so tried to take some business and economics classes instead, but felt miserable. In a moment of rebellion, he applied for an art school behind his parent's back and got accepted. Against his father’s advice, he applied himself into his art, and it’s paid off with his vast and rich portfolio.
