Anit Thapa is an Indian politician and the founder-president of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), a regional political party based in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal, India. He currently serves as the Chief Executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), a semi-autonomous administrative body in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.

Early life and education

Thapa was born in Mungpoo, located in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. He completed his schooling in Kurseong and higher education in Darjeeling.[1]

Political career

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (2007–2021)

Thapa joined the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in 2007, during the height of the renewed Gorkhaland movement.[1] In 2013, he was elected unopposed to the GTA from Kurseong constituency.[1]

Following the GJM’s internal rift after the 2017 Gorkhaland agitation, Thapa aligned with Binoy Tamang to form a splinter group within GJM, which supported administrative governance and peaceful politics. He was later appointed Vice-Chairman and then Acting Chairman of the GTA between 2017 and 2019.[2]

Formation of Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (2021)

On 9 September 2021, Anit Thapa officially launched the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) in Darjeeling.[3] The party was formed to provide a constitutional and development-oriented platform for Gorkha communities in the hills.

The party flag features a sunrise, crossed khukuris, a river, a tea leaf, and trees, symbolizing various cultural and geographic aspects of the region.[1]

GTA elections and governance (2022–present)

In the 2022 GTA elections, BGPM won 27 out of 45 seats, securing a clear majority. Anit Thapa was sworn in as Chief Executive of the GTA on 14 July 2022.[4]

The same year, BGPM also formed the civic board in Darjeeling Municipality after several councillors from Hamro Party joined BGPM.[5]

In 2023, BGPM reintroduced the two-tier Panchayati Raj system in the GTA region after a gap of more than two decades, forming boards in 8 Panchayat Samitis and over 100 Gram Sabhas.[1]

Thapa has also advocated for land rights for tea garden workers, launching the “Mero Jamin Mero Adhikar” campaign in 2023.[6]

Political positions

Thapa promotes peaceful and constitutional means to address Gorkha demands, focusing on governance, land rights, and development in the hill regions. He has maintained political ties with the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal while retaining BGPM’s independent regional identity.[7]

Personal life

Thapa is known to keep a low public profile and focus on grassroots politics in the Darjeeling hills.[1]
