Haskell Singing School

Haskell Singing School is an anual singing school in Haskell, Texas that is five days long. It is on either the second or third week of July every year. The school is at Haskell Church of Christ, and its purpose is to teach many young people how to sing, harmonize, write music, and song lead, as well as many other things. The students are taught about fourteen songs every year that they perform the last night of the school for parents, friends, and people of the Haskell community. They also learn other new songs that they can spread to their youth groups and churches. Children aged ten and older may attend.

History

Haskell Singing School's first year was in 1965. It has met every year since then, and many students and instructors have come for several years. In July 2010, Haskell Singing School will have its 45th annual session.

Make-up

Haskell Singing School is made up of students of various ages and locations. The students are aged ten and up, most being in their teens. However, there are many adult students. Most people that attend the singing school are members of the Church of Christ. However, there are some that come from other Christian denominations. Haskell Singing School has the same style of the Church of Christ in that the singers do not use musical instruments. All of the singing and devotionals are a capella.

The Houses

Unlike at ordinary church camps, students at Haskell Singing School do not stay in cabins. Instead, people from Haskell Church of Christ volunteer room in their homes for the children to stay. There is also an RV park in Haskell that some people choose to stay in. Others stay in motels. The kids that stay in houses have a wonderful experience. The adults they stay with act as their parents during the week, and they get time to bond with other people their age and make friends.

Classes

All students can choose a class from the various classes offered. There is a class for beginning students so that they can learn music theory and how to read music. Older beginners have a seperate class, but learn the same material. For students with intermediate knowledge of music, there are two classes. The first deals more with music theory, and the second begins with music theory, but progresses more quickly and ends up covering subjects such as harmonizing. The advanced classes are harmony, song writing, and a class in between that is a combination of the two. All classes are taught by instructors with excellent knowledge of music and ample experience.
