Hey. Mrs.Mac's Full Review: Digimon: Digital Monsters Just for the record, I am a Christian Mom. However, I tend to be a bit more liberal than some when it comes to letting my children decide what to watch. I believe sheltering my children too much isn't a good idea. I prefer to talk about what they do see and keep the lines of communication open.
I never paid too much attention to Digimon. My boys liked to watch it, and what little I did know about the plot seemed fine. The way I understood it, it is about a group of kids that were stuck in a video game. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but that's my understanding in a nutshell.
A couple of weeks ago, something caught my attention that made me turn it off immediately. They were reading some inscription on a wall referring to a beast who's number was 666. Only the chosen one could slay this beast. That was all I needed to see, the channel was turned and Digimon will not come on in this house again.
I mentioned this to my husband, and he told me he had seen some references to a couple of angel-like beings, one was white, the other black. The black one was referred to as an "angel of darkness", and from what I understand these are regular characters on the show.
For those of you that are Christian, my objection will be obvious. For those of you who are not, just think about it, do our children really NEED this in their Saturday morning cartoons? Whether or not you believe in the existence of a demonic world, is this something you want your children introduced to, even subtly?
Children tend to get caught up in TV shows, some rather intensely. Both of my sons at one time or another have come to me and talked about a show, asking "Could that be true?", or "What if there really were..." I'm sure we've all seen a child get obsessed with one show or another. They start to dress like the characters, draw pictures of it, and play act it out. No matter how you believe, do you want your child battling a beast who's number is 666 or an angel of darkness in your back yard?
I am not trying to impose my beliefs on anyone, but parents beware, there ARE those out there who would impose theirs on your children without your knowledge or consent. I strongly believe a lot of what is on television today is doing just that. I think there is more to Digimon than what is just on the surface. Sit down a watch a few shows, and decide for yourself, but be aware of all the shows your children are watching. I know my children are sticking to Bugs Bunny, after all, cartoons are supposed to be fun, not demonic.
