[[Category:]]Derivation of the term-
Lamans are also known as Vanjaries in various parts of the country. A Vanjari or a trader seems to be occupational description, is etymologically identical with Vanijya which means trade or commerce. These tribes were in the past engaged in carrying grains and supplies for armies, before the time of cart-roads and railways. The term Laman also seems to be derived from "Laman (salt), the Tribe being the chief carrier of salt in the past. The term Banjara, derived from "Banij" meaning trader or perhaps from "Baniji" , meaning pedlar's pack is used in the west of Punjab, as a generic term for pedlar. Indeed it is to be feared that in that part of province persons have been shown as Banjara in consequence of their occupation only. The name Banjara is supposed to be derived from the Persian word "Berinj Arind", means "dealers in rice" (Shakespear's Dictionary). Vanjari or Vanjara is the corrupt form of "Vanaskara" i.e. moving about in forest. Caran or Cháran also comes from the same root. Vanjara means burners or the inhabitants of woods, while yet others say that the word means an arrow. It may, with equal plausibility, be referred to Vanachara (Sanskrit meaning wanderer in the forest), on account of the nomadic character of the tribe. The true derivation is perhaps from the Sanskrit term "Vanja" (trader, merchant) which is also responsible for the term Bania and Banijiga (meaning trader).
Derivation of the term :
Banjara a synomym for Vanjari. Brinajari a synomym for Lambadi. Banjara, Brinjari, Lambadi, Lamane, Vanjara, Gohar, Herkeri (Carnatic), grain and salt carriers, cattlebreeders and cattle dealers, found all over the country but especially over the districts of Warangal and Adilabad, which abound in rich pastures (A.P), Lamadi/ from Lamban - length- which has perhaps probable reference to the long line or train in which their bullocks move. The tribal name is Gohar - a man. Banjaras are a caste of carriers and drivers of pack-bullocks. They are also called Charous or Lambanis. The common name, and the one, by which they prefer to be known is Banjaras. They say the term, "Lambani" applied to them; by others, is a mistake and it denotes an allied division of their tribe. Sukalis They are also called by some as Sukalies, but they resent the appelation. of the term Sukali various meanings, such as "men of good colour,or language or northern country," are suggested, but these appears , to be all of doubtfull accuracy. It is said by some that it means Areca nut, being the corrupt form of Supari, it is also referred to, as a name of Lingayat (Sukali Setti) whose trade of fire wood selling was very prosperous and was taken by Banjaras when they came to Southern India. From this they became known as men of Sukali Setti's trade or Sukali's. Guguria Banjaras take their name from trading in Gugur - a kind of gum.
Vanshavali- Gotra- Definations of Gotra and Parivar :
Suryavansh, Chandravansh, Sheshvansh alias Nagavansh and Brahmavansh alias Yaduvansh alias Harivansh are the four Kshatriya Sages and visionaries and composers of Vedaas, who are deemed to be the forefathers of the kshatryias and from their names the Gotra system was started. Gotrarishi means the founding father of a Kula.
Pravarrishi can be said as the father of the Gotrarishis. Hence we can see that though there are many Gotrarishis, Pravarrishis are very less. Generally four-five Gotrarishis come under a Pravarrishi.Gandhata, Ambarish, Yuvanashwa are some of the names of the Pravarishis which are the names of famous Suryavanshi Kshatriya kings, similarly Sunahitra, Ajmil are famous Chandravanshi Kings. Bhrugu and Angaris, are from Gan pravar and are mostly Kshatriya kings.
Importance of Gotra Pravar :
For the Vedic Hindu followers they need to know their Gotra and Pravar in various religious ceremonies like, wedding, post death ceremonies like Shradhha, Paksha, Uttarkriya. The reason is that when a person does a religious ceremony at that time he remembers this forefather and ancestors and it this Gotra and Pravar which tell the family tree. This is a 5000 year old tradition. This is well documented on various stone carvings and copper plates. The gotras of Brahmins and Marathas are many times similar, the reason being in ancient times Brahmins were as a result of knowledge and achievement of a person and not by birth. Mostly all Gotrarishi are Kshatriyas.
Kshatriya Gotras :
The Brahmins have been telling that, the Kshatriyas, Vaishya and Sudras did not have independent gotra and pravars and hence they used to take on the gotra and pravars of their family preists, but unfortunately this is not true. In fact, research has shown that it is in fact the opposite. The brahmins have donned the gotras and pravars of the kshatriyas.
Brahmins consider themselves the decendents of the seven main sages, Angiras, Bhrugu, Vishwamitra, Kashyap, Vasishtha, Atri and Agasti. Of these sages Vishwamitra was Kshatriya, Kaushik gotra is also of Kshatriyas. Certain text Vishwamitra has been refered as Kaushik. The Bhrugu gotra families consider good fortune to get a girl from this family. Jamdagni's mother Satyavati was Vishwamitras sister, and his wife Renuka was also a Kshatriya. Hence it can be seen that the Gotras of Kshatriyas have a very solid foundation.
Suryavanshi are not forbidden to intermarry. Udaipurs Guhilod and Jaipurs Kachwahas though belong to Suryavanshi families are related my intermarriages. Lord Ram and Sita were also both from Suryavanshi families. Arjun and Draupadi were from Chandravanshi families.
Gotras of Glorious Ancient Rulers :
The ancient rulers were so glorious that the heavenly bodies were named after them. The below given rulers with their gotras is as per recorded in the Purnas. "Skand Purna" written by Shri Vyas Rishi, in the volume named "Sahyadri khand" under the chapter "Shannabati":
Surya, King of Kalinga whose gotra was Kashyap. Soma, King of area near Yamuna river whose gotra was Atreya. Mangal, King of Avanti whose gotra was Atri. Budha, King of Magadh whose gotra was Angiras. Guru, King of Sindhu whose gotra was Bhargav. Shukra, King of Bhojkot whose gotra was Kashyap. Shani, King of Saurashtra whose gotra was Kashyap. Rahu, King of Babar whose gotra was Maitrenis. Ketu, King of Kalinga whose gotra was Jaimini.
