Hi, I’m Richard. I enjoy trying to contribute to Wikipedia in my spare time, with a particular interest in improving articles related to travel, tourism, and conservation, especially when it comes to Africa, a place I’ve been lucky enough to experience and want to see represented accurately here.
Away from travel topics, I have a lifelong love of steam trains. My favourite steam journey is the Paignton to Kingswear line for Dartmouth, while on the UK mainline it’s hard to beat London to Edinburgh for the mix of scenery and the destination. In Europe, a highlight was taking the train from Venice to Florence as part of a longer backpacking trip that also took in Rome, Pisa, Naples, and the ancient city of Pompeii.
The LNER Mallard, in its iconic blue livery and with its sleek streamlined casing, is my all-time favourite locomotive. Still the world speed record holder for steam.
I also have a passion for words and language. I’m a big fan of Susie Dent’s etymological deep dives and Gyles Brandreth’s lively love of the English language.
I enjoy researching and checking facts, whether on a train journey or in the evenings and often prefer digging through archives over switching on the TV.
My aim here is to make factual, well-sourced contributions that help articles meet Wikipedia’s content and style guidelines.
