This page is a first cut (aka stub) at creating a HOWTO for setting up a Wikipedia mirror. The author's situation, which may not match yours, is as follows:

  • The mirror will be installed on an Apple MacBook, running Mac OS X.
  • The mirror will be updated irregularly (e.g., every few months).
  • The mirror will be accessed over a LAN, at least initially.
  • Only the English-language articles, templates, image descriptions, and primary meta-pages are of interest.

Ingredients

These are the package versions I'm using, as of 2007.0706:

  • Mac OS X (e.g., 10.5 - WWDC Leopard seed release)
  • MediaWiki (1.9.3 is current stable release)
  • MySQL (5.0.41-osx10.4-i686.dmg)
  • PHP (5.2.2 is pre-installed by the OS)
  • Wikipedia dump file (pages-articles.xml.bz2; 2007-05-30 09:17:01)

Procedure

  • Download all files (the dump file takes a while!).
  • Install MySQL, then MediaWiki.
  • Load Wikipedia database from the dump file.
