James Charles (Model)

James Charles Dickinson (born May 23, 1999), known as James Charles, is an American internet personality, self-taught makeup artist, and model.

Charles created an Instagram page in 2015, sharing a variety of unique and elaborate makeup looks [1]. After Charles had received a lot of public attention from his postings, CoverGirl reached out to Charles [1]. In 2016, Charles became the first male ambassador for CoverGirl [1].

Today, Charles is most popular for his personal YouTube page focused on makeup tutorial videos where he has amassed more than 15 million subscribers [2].

Personal Life

Charles was born in Bethlehem, New York and comes from a family of four [3]. At the age of 12, Charles revealed his sexuality to his parents who in response were very supportive [3]. Charles is now openly gay. As a child, Charles took a strong interest towards the art of drawing and painting [4]. Charles first entered the beauty world through hair styling [4]. The young artist got into makeup unexpectedly after he was asked by a friend to do their makeup [4]. After this experiment, Charles began to utilize his artistic skills by practicing on other clients [4]. After graduating from Bethlehem Central High School in June of 2017, he then pursued his interest in makeup as a Beauty Vlogger [3].

Modelling

At the age of 17, Charles became the first male spokesmodel for CoverGirl and was the face of the So Lashy! by BlastPro mascara [3].

Charles walked in the 2017 Marco Marco Fashion show, featuring LGBTQ community, during Los Angeles Fashion Week [5].

Internet Personality

Charles launched his YouTube channel, focusing on makeup, on December 1, 2015 [3]. As of March 14, 2019, Charles has over 15 million subscribers [2]. Charles carries a strong social media following on Instagram (14.8 million followers) and Twitter (3.37 million followers) [6][7]. Charles keeps a stable social media presence by uploading weekly content onto each platform. Sisters Apparel

In 2018, Charles launched his clothing brand, Sisters Apparel [8]. The look book for the clothing line includes a diversified group of models with a variety of body shapes and sizes [8]. The Sisters Apparel collection is made up of hoodies, long sleeves, t-shirts, sports bras, sweatpants, leggings, biker shorts, boxers, jumpsuits and accessories [8]. Collaborations

Charles collaborated with Morphe in 2018 for the creation and release of his eyeshadow palette, Unleash Your Inner Artist, and brush set, James Charles X Morphe. Unleash Your Inner Artist features 39 pigmented rainbow shadows and retails for $50 CAD [9]. The eyeshadow palette has sold out in under ten minutes three times online [10]. The brush set is made up of 34 eye and face brushes and includes a beauty sponge and custom case that holds the set [11]. The James Charles brush set retails for $190 CAD [11].

Controversy

2017 Africa and Ebola Tweet

In 2017, Charles shared a controversial comment over the social media platform Twitter. Charles tweeted "I can’t believe we’re going to Africa today omg what if we get Ebola" [12]. Charles received negative backlash from his offensive tweet after making a distasteful reference to Africa and Ebola [12]. The tweet was removed and shortly after Charles released an apology message over Twitter [12]. CoverGirl was quick to state that the ambassadors derogatory tweet did not represent the brands perspective [12].

Pennywise Makeup Tutorial

Charles took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the 2017 drama/thriller movie IT [13]. After tweeting that he did not like the movie, stating that it was in fact awful, celebrity star of the film Fin Wolfhard responded to his tweet firing back at the beauty vlogger [13]. Weeks later Charles posted an IT themed makeup tutorial on his YouTube channel. The video garnered mixed reviews as some viewers were angry while others enjoyed the video [13].

Ariana Grande "Rudest Celebrity"

Charles reveals his worst celebrity experience in Shane Dawson’s YouTube video [14]. Shortly after the Ebola scandal, Charles attended an Ariana Grande concert where he posted several clips of his experience at the concert [14]. The celebrity pop star messaged Charles thanking him for attending the concert. Shortly after, the singer followed Charles on his Instagram page [14]. At this time, Charles was still receiving hate comments from the recent scandal. The pop star was quick to unfollow Charles after her fans expressed their anger towards his previous actions [14]. The singer shared with Charles that she had unfollowed him due to her angry fans, who she did not want to disappoint [14]. Charles felt he was being bullied online after this scandal and saw Ariana Grande as perpetuating the bullying by unfollowing him [14].

Fenty Beauty Review

Charles received negative backlash from viewers after releasing his Fenty Beauty review video on YouTube [15]. Charles shared that he did not like the formula and pigmentation of Rihanna's makeup line, Fenty beauty. Viewers accused the beauty guru of using the wrong shade of makeup and application tools for the makeup, resulting in what was believed to be a faulty review [15].
