Jade Alexandra Botterill (born December 1990)[1] is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Ossett and Denby Dale since 2024.[2] She serves as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Office.[3]
Early life
Botterill grew up in Wakefield, her mother worked as a carer and her father as a prison officer.[4] She did not attend university and began working at the local River Island store aged 16, having worked since age 13.[5] [6]
She also worked as the Community Development Officer for local rugby team Wakefield Trinity where she campaigned on to improve local children's health and wellbeing.[4]
Early career
Botterill worked as parliamentary assistant and head of office to Yvette Cooper, MP now Home Secretary, from 2013 to 2019 who she met whilst campaigning to save a Sure Start centre in Cooper's constituency.[7] She also worked as a Corporate Affairs Advisor for Yorkshire Water, and later Public Affairs Manager for 38 Degrees.[8] Prior to her election, she worked for Portland Communications.[9]
Parliamentary career
Botterill was selected as the Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for the Ossett and Denby Dale constituency in September 2023.[10]
Shortly after her election, she was appointed as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Office.[3] In her maiden speech, she said one of her focuses as a Member of Parliament would be campaigning for opportunities for young people in her constituency.[11]
In November 2024, Botterill voted in favour of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which proposes to legalise assisted suicide.[12] Botterill has campaigned and voted for more regulation of the water industry.[13]
