Leben und Werk
Born to a military family in Northern Ireland and having moved back to New Zealand in 1954, Neill attended school and university, where he completed a degree in English Literature. He began early working as an actor and worked as a director and a screenwriter for the National Film Unit for six years. In the 70s he undertook his first film and TV role and he became widely known to the Australian and Oceanian public through My Brilliant Career (1979). He also gained notoriety with Dead Calm next to Nicole Kidman (1988).
In the 80s, he first became involved with work in Europe and the USA. He played the main character in 1981 in the German-French horror film Possession (1981). His most well-known period was in the 90s, when he was in Steven Spielberg's internationally successful Jurassic Park (1993) as the leading role of the Palaeontologist Dr. Alan Grant. This role was reprised in 2001 for the third instalment Jurassic Park III as well as Jurassic World Dominion, which was released in cinemas in June 2022. In addition to this, he gained popularity through films such as the Tom Clancy's film-adaptation The Hunt for Red October (1990) or the award-winning romantic drama The Piano (1993), in which he assumed a more ambivalent character, rather than the gentler roles he was known for. In 1997, he caused a stir among Science Fiction fans with the Sci-Fi horror film Event Horizon alongside Laurence Fishburne.
He also played lead roles in many TV productions, for example the fantasy series Merlin (1998) or the crime series Peaky Blinders (2013-2014).
Neill has a son with fellow actor Lisa Harrow, a daughter with makeup artist Noriko Watanabe and a step-daughter. Since 2017 he has been with journalist and author Laura Tingle. Since 1993 he had been the owner of Two Paddocks Ltd., a small family-owned wine making business in Otago (New Zealand).
In March 2023, he published the autobiography Did I Ever Tell You This?, in which he explained that he had has to undergo chemotherapy after he was diagnosed with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) - a form of Non-Hodgkins lymphoma.[1][2][3]
His German voiceover actor is predominantly Wolfgang Condrus.[4]
