Takahide Koike is a Japanese artist and abstract painter. He was born in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, in 1960. In 1988, he graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1990, he completed his postgraduate studies in oil painting at the Graduate School of Fine Arts of Tokyo University of the Arts.

Style and technique

Takahide Koike focuses on the relationship of colors in his paintings, creating abstract artworks that rely on hues rather than concrete images.[1]

His works consist of layers upon layers of thinly diluted acrylic paint, constructing the canvas solely through the presence of color without the use of any specific motifs or symbols. However, they are never purely two-dimensional. The relationship between colors, the interplay of color and form, and the interaction of color and texture unfold a unique spatial expression. A technique called 'staining', where acrylic paint is allowed to soak into cotton fabric, is frequently employed.[2]

From the late 1980s to around 1992, he applied acrylic paint over a base coat made with a white pigment from glue, and in his earliest works, he sometimes also utilized oil paints. After his first solo exhibition in 1992, he stopped using the glue-based undercoat. By doing away with this, he shifted towards creating works that capitalized on the permeability and fluidity of acrylic paint.[1]

The reason he incorporated staining was due to his discovery of Morris Louis, which sometimes leads to his association with Color Field painting. However, this influence is strictly limited to technique; his work is more rooted in a uniquely Japanese aesthetic sensibility. Koike's paintings, where water-diluted paint permeates the canvas, evoke the delicacy and fluctuation of nature in areas where colors harmonize and in others where they clash. These evoke sensations that are esteemed within traditional Japanese values.[1][2][3]
