Nicholas Goldsmith FAIA LEED AP (born 1952 also known as Nic Goldsmith) is an American architect and designer. Goldsmith worked in the 70's as a designer at Frei Otto's Atelier in Germany and has developed the New York firm, FTL Design Engieering Studio as a leading design firm in the development of lightweight and special structures over the past 30 years. Goldsmith's work has been inspired by using the principles of nature as a development tool in understanding structurally efficient enclosures which use a minimum of mass for their span. He sees the history of building as a slow evolution from mass to membrane, from heavy stone structures to luminous, lightweight and environmentally responsible buildings.

Nicholas Goldsmith has designed many of FTL's signature projects, including the traveling Carlos Moseley Music Pavilion for the Metropolitan Opera and NY Philharmonic, the Russell Aitken Seabird Aviary at the Bronx Zoo, the DKNY World Headquarters Building in New York, Sun Valley Music Pavilion in Idaho, the Harley-Davidson "Open Road" Traveling Exhibit Hall, the Cirque du Soleil Tensile Structures at Disney World, the Rosa Parks Transit Center in Detroit and the MOMRA Recreation Center in Saudi Arabia.

Nicholas Goldsmith has designed exhibitions including "Under the Sun" an exhibition on solar energy for the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in 1998 and the Smithsonian in 1999 which included the first use of thin film photovoltaics applied directly to membrane structures and a worldwide traveling interactive exhibition for the United Nations(UNFPA).

He has been featured in numerous publications including an Architectural Monograph titled: FTL: SOFTNESS, MOVEMENT & LIGHT, published by Academy Editions in 1998.

His awards include five IFAI Outstanding Achievement Awards from 2000 to 2007, the 2000 Dupont Benedictus Award and the IDEA bronze Award for the Under the Sun Pavilion, 1997 NY Chapter AIA Design Award for the Russell B. Aitken Seabird Aviary, the 1996 USITT (United States Institute for Theater Technology) Award of Merit for the Carlos Moseley Music Pavilion, the 28th Bard Award for Excellence in Architecture and Urban Design for the Carlos Moseley Music Pavilion, the 1992 New York State AIA award for Excellence in Design for the DKNY Showroom Building, the 1990 Waterfront Center's Award for the Bicentennial Commons at Sawyer Point Park in Cincinnati, and the 1986 State of Florida's Governors Design Award .
