Eamon Mullan (1951 – 21 February 2022) was a British-born chef who spent most of his professional career in Kenya. He was executive chef at Nairobi’s Norfolk Hotel, later led the Pango Restaurant at the Fairview Hotel, and became one of the country’s most influential culinary mentors.[1][2]

Early life

Mullan was born in London to Irish parents in 1951.[1] Trained as a chef in Britain, he won early awards including Apprentice of the Year and medals in the Young Chef of Great Britain competition.[1] He moved to Kenya in 1975 on a short contract and remained for nearly five decades.[1]

Career

Mullan rose to prominence as executive chef at Nairobi’s Norfolk Hotel, where he led the Ibis Grill and witnessed the 1980 New Year’s Eve bombing.[1] He later became associated with the Fairview Hotel’s Pango Restaurant, which he developed into a highly regarded fine-dining venue.[3][2]

Over his career, Mullan cooked for numerous international dignitaries and celebrities, including Queen Elizabeth II during a 1983 visit to Treetops Hotel.[1]

He retired from professional kitchens in 2013.[1]

Mentorship and influence

Mullan was noted for training and mentoring younger Kenyan chefs. He established competitions, arranged overseas placements, and supervised apprenticeships that produced many of the country’s future executive chefs.[1][4] His former trainees later described him as a demanding but transformative influence on their careers.[2]

Publications

Mullan co-authored a Kenyan cookbook in the early 1980s and later published a memoir:

  • Kathy Eldon and Eamon Mullan, Tastes of Kenya (Kenway Publications, Nairobi, 1981).[5]
  • Eamon Mullan, Food for the Famous: A Celebrity Chef in Africa (Footprints Press, Nairobi, 2020).[6]

Death

Mullan died in Nanyuki, Kenya, on 21 February 2022.[7]
