R-Linux is a free file recovery utility designed for the Ext2, Ext3, and Ext4 file systems found in the Linux operating system and several Unix-like environments.[1][2]

Overview

R-Linux enables the recovery of deleted files or lost data caused by accidental deletion, formatting, virus attacks, power failures, and partition corruption on Ext2/Ext3/Ext4 file systems.[3] It is developed and distributed by R-Tools Technology Inc.

Features

  • File System Support: Ext2, Ext3, Ext4 FS, which are commonly used on Linux distributions.[4]
  • Recovery Functions: Recovers files removed by deletion, damaged by viruses, or lost due to corrupted partitions and logical system crashes.[5]
  • Raw File Recovery: Supports recognition and restoration of files using known file types, even if the file system is severely damaged.[6]
  • Advanced Search: Offers flexible search and filtering options for finding recoverable files by file name, size, timestamps, and more.
  • Imaging: Can create image files of entire disks, partitions, or their parts for backup or future recovery.[7]
  • S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring: Reads S.M.A.R.T. attributes to help predict drive failures.[8]
  • Preview Function: Allows users to preview most common file types before recovery.[9]
  • Cross-Platform Use: Can recover data from Linux drives when run on a Windows machine, and vice versa (with physical drive access).[10]

Supported Operating Systems

While primarily focused on Linux, R-Linux can also operate under Windows and recover data from Linux file systems connected via additional drives or networked devices.[4]

Limitations

R-Linux is read-only and will not write to the damaged disk, thereby preventing further data loss.[11] The software does not support recovery of encrypted or highly fragmented files, nor does it repair physically damaged hardware.

Licensing and Availability

R-Linux is distributed as freeware for both home and commercial uses. It is available for download from the developer’s website.[11]
