The Four Horned Vulture
The four-horned vulture is a rare member of the larger vulture family. Like it’s fellow large birds of prey, it feasts mainly on dead animals, though they have been known to attack small animals, including rabbits, gophers, and dogs.
The four-horned vulture is indigenous to the southeast interior of British Columbia, and though rarely sighted, it has been seen throughout the Columbia Valley. It’s a nocturnal bird, coming out only at night to hunt and feast on the dead.
The four-horned vulture can be identified by the four unique raised skin bumps on the back of the head, known as “horns”. It’s an exceptionally large bird, larger than most the rest of the vulture family. It ranges from 4-6 feet in height, and it’s wing span can reach up to 10 feet. It’s talons are also unique. Ornithologists have described their tracks as that of a human hand with gnarled finger tips.
