Rajveer Purohit (born September 9, 1971) is an Indian-American urologist who is Professor of Urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Director of Reconstructive Urology at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.[1] He directs Mount Sinai's Fellowship in Reconstructive Urology, a one-year program offered through the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons.[2]
Purohit's clinical and research work focuses on reconstructive urology, urethral stricture disease, and gender-affirming surgery. He co-developed, with Jerry G. Blaivas, an anterior urethral stricture staging system and is co-editor, with Miroslav L. Djordjevic, of the 2023 textbook Atlas of Operative Techniques in Gender Affirmation Surgery.[3][4]
Biography
Purohit was born in Jodhpur, India. He graduated from Williams College in 1993,[5] then earned an MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and an MPH from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.[1] He completed a surgical internship in general surgery and a residency in urology at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by fellowship training in pelvic reconstruction and voiding dysfunction.[1]
He is married to physician Mamta Purohit and has also worked as a painter.[6]
Research
Purohit's earlier work focused on reconstructive urology and urethral stricture disease. He and his co-authors proposed an anterior urethral stricture staging system in 2014,[3] and in 2017 he co-authored a study on the natural history of low-stage urethral strictures.[7]
His later work has focused on outcomes and complications in gender-affirming genital surgery. This has included publications on prostate cancer in transgender women,[8] vaginal stenosis after vaginoplasty,[9] rectal injury during penile inversion vaginoplasty,[10] robot-assisted sigmoid vaginoplasty for gender dysphoria,[11] and testicular implant complications after transmasculine gender-affirming surgery.[12]
Publications
Purohit co-authored, with Jerry G. Blaivas, Diagnosis and Treatment of Overactive Bladder (Oxford University Press, 2011),[13] and co-edited, with Miroslav L. Djordjevic, Atlas of Operative Techniques in Gender Affirmation Surgery (Elsevier, 2023).[4]
