"Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita mi ritrovai per una selva oscura ché la diritta via era smarrita.

Ahi quanto a dir qual era è cosa dura esta selva selvaggia e aspra e forte che nel pensier rinova la paura!

Tant'è amara che poco è più morte; io so ben com'i'v'intrai, io so ben com'i'v'la verace via abbandonai."[1]

La folta selva che m'avea di paura il cor compunto non e' terminata. Ora, quantomeno, il timore un poco queta, tante' che alcune giornate una luce vedo. A volte, la luce abbaglia, che bene non e', altre e' timida. Poi, non di rado, mi volgo a mirare la via fatta e il torpore mi assale. Non e' tempo per posare il corpo lasso. La palude e' alle spalle, la selva e' qui: il cammino continua.[2]

Buio. Buio, solo buio. Luce non vedo; il timore travolge; la speranza tace; la morte e' viva. Luce, dove sei? Speranza, parlami! I neri tamburi danzano.
