Merufumoto Ryu Bojutsu Iaido and Iaijutsu was founded in 2006 by Mel Shead specifically for the study and practice of the art of Bojutsu. From small beginnings it has grown to a solid group of dedicated exponents with many high levels of achievement in a multitude of different Martial Arts. Mel has multiple dan grades in a number of martial arts that he has practiced and studied since 1975. We believe that Mel is the only person in Australia teaching Bojutsu as an exclusive art, not just a sub-set of another arts syllabus. In mid-2011 The 500 year old Japanese art of iaido in which Mel holds a second degree black belt (nidan) was introduced into the syllabus as an option. The style of iaido practiced, is a modified version of Seitei iaido. More recently, iaijutsu (combat style) has been added to the sword syllabus. Although influenced by other styles, the iaijutsu kata are of our own design and are still a work in progress. The four kata currently practiced will be added to in time. It should be noted that not all students join in with the sword disciplines. Training is approached in a casual, social manner in which the formality generally associated with martial arts is avoided except where essential as in the case of the sword arts. Students do not pay training fees, only a once per year nominal contribution toward expenses comprising mainly of insurances.
