Nilima Sheikh

Biography:

Nilima Sheikh was born in 1954 in New Delhi. At an early age she was exposed to the art community, the lifestyle of artists and their achievements. It was a style that she had access to because she was close with her teachers and their daughters. Sheikh studied at Dehli University in Baroda and received her Master of Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao of University of Baroda. She trained herself in art history before becoming an artist. Her first paintings were “Western Style” oil paintings. She married Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, who was a well-known artist by the time she married him. She produces beautiful paintings about contemporary Indian life.

Mid – Career:

·     Mainly interested in historical Asian traditions

·     Miniature, mural, Thangka, Chinese, and Japanese painter. Also, a Cambodian sculptor and more.

·     Self-taught in miniature painting.

Favorite Artists:

·     Bhupen Khakhar, Nasreen Mohamedi, Arpita Singh, Gulan Mohammed Sheikh, Nailini Malani, Vivian Sundaran, and Madhui Parekh.
