Complex Inorganic Color Pigments (CICP) provide enhanced performance in Heat and chemical stability, UV opacity, hiding power, and infrared (IR) reflectivity. [1]
Typically, color is considered the most important factor when it comes to color pigments. However, color pigments are used outside, too (for example, to paint a building). In this case, the pigments are needed for exterior durable or high heat coatings. Heat and chemical stability, UV opacity, hiding power, and infrared (IR) reflectivity become some of the most important attributes in such coatings. That's where CICPs come in. They are very stable pigments that are chemically inert. They can withstand extremely agressive environments and still maintain the color. They will not fade in the presence of ozone, acid rain, SOx, NOx or other air pollutants common in industrialized areas. They will even remain colorfast in the presence of strong acids, bases, oxidizing or reducing agents. They are non-migratory, and will not dissolve or bleed in contact with solvents.
CICPs are also the most heat stable type of pigments known. They are made at very high temperatures in a process called calcination.
UV protection is essential when it comes to outdoor coatings. CICPs ensure that colors don't fade with sun exposure. CICPs absorb incident UV photons and convert their energy to a more benign form, similar to the way organic light stabilizers operate. Many CICPs absorb strongly in the UV region, which makes them very good UV blockers.

The Shepherd Color Company, a worldwide company based in Cincinnati, Ohio, has been a world-class producer of Complex Inorganic Color Pigments (CICPs) for four generations. History
It all started at The Shepherd Chemical Company in 1916 with Lee Shepherd.
Lee Shepherd began his career with a degree in chemistry from Case Institute of Technology. While working at industry leading companies in the chemical industry, Lee gained the confidence to start his own company motivated with an entreprenurial spirit and a desire for an established career within his hometown of Norwood, Ohio.
Metal soaps were used as printing ink and paint driers. Shepherd manufactuered compounds such as cobalt and lead at their facility in order to then sell it into the marketplace. Also, lubricant additives for use in Model T Ford planetary transmissions was one of Shepherd's earliest products.
As cobalt product sales grew, so did the interest in the sources of this metal. Because of this interest, Shepherd took on efforts to establish a supply source from around the world to supplement the primary sources in Canada during the 1920's and 30's. Shepherd's secure metals supply and capabilities led to it becoming a leading supplier of metal salts and carboxylates for a variety of growing applications.
In the late 1920's, John F. Shepherd (Lee's son) joined the family business and began the business for manufacturing coloring oxides for use in porcelain enamel applications. John, a ceramic engineer, created his business and watched it expand into new markets such as architectural coatings. It eventually grew so much that it became a stand alone company in 1980. It is now one of the leading suppliers of complex inorganic color pigments in the industry.
The Shepherd Color Company is now operating under the leadership of the family's fourth generation. [2]
