Milwaukee Jewish Day School is located in suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin, near the border of Whitefish Bay and Fox Point. This private K-8 school’s address is 6401 N. Santa Monica Blvd. The school’s website is www.mjds.org.

The education at Milwaukee Jewish Day School is very good. Students learn Jewish studies and Hebrew lalong with typical subjects like reading, math, science, and social studies. The school uses a special math program called CSMP to teach math concepts.

MJDS students also enjoy music, art, gym, and computers. Students in third to fifth grades enjoy Chugim (choice), when choose activities like surprise games, outside play, quiet games, computers, and more. Sixth through eighth grades enjoy Omanut (art). Every quarter, students choose special activities like playing a musical instrument, being in a play, calligraphy, quilting, graphic design, cooking, and more. Extracurricular activities for boys and girls include basketball, cross country, track, volleyball, and tennis.

One special thing about MJDS is that staff members are called by the Hebrew words Geveret (Mrs.) and Adon (Mr.). Also, Milwaukee Jewish Day School keeps kosher. At lunch time, students can’t bring meat. When someone brings in a birthday treat, the treat has to be kosher.

Special teachers at MJDS include Gev. Porat, who is a natural at art, and Gev. Cohen and Gev. Lambert, our two music teachers who make the most beautiful music. The two science teachers at the school, Gev. Friedman and Gev. Weisz, can conduct magical experiments that are fascinating. The wonderful Hebrew teachers, Geverets Rubenstein, Minash, Altman-Shafer, and Krivitsky, can teach how to speak Hebrew fluently in no time. Our Jewish studies teachers, Geverets Bachar, Altman-Shafer, Rosengarten and Adon Katz, are very familiar with Jewish history and can teach it easily. Not to mention our fit gym teachers, Adons Kass and Fujinaka, who can get their students so active that they’re sweating and having lots of fun.

MJDS is a bully-free zone because everyone should feel safe. A great rabbi once said, “Do not do unto others what is hateful to you.” Something of the same sort appears in other religious as well. Everyone likes to be treated nicely. Since this school is a bully-free school, bullying is not allowed. Steps to Respect and Second Steps offer lessons that help students get along.

MJDS opened in the fall of 1981 with eleven students. Founding director Doris Shneidman and five community rabbis had a dream of having a community Jewish day school in Milwaukee. Their dream has become a reality. MJDS currently has 197 students in junior kindergarten through eighth grade, and the school has more than 600 alumni.

Another special thing at MJDS in the 2011-12 school year is the pilot one-to-one computer project in sixth grade. The sixth graders received iPads to use for the school year. The students will get to keep their iPads when they graduate eighth grade. Sixth grade teachers also received iPads to use.

MJDS is located in the north building of the Karl Campus, operated by the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. The Jewish Community Center is located in the south building, and the north building is home three schools: MJDS, Hillel Academy, and Jewish Beginnings. The schools share gyms, the lunchroom, and the library. There is a very large library with more than 23,000 books and other media.
