Practice Editing Here (Nov 23rd in-class Wiki session work)

Assignment # 3

  • Wikipedia Assignment #3 Article: Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
  • 1. Proposed Changes I wish to replace the sentence “Some subtypes have a median survival of 6-8 years, while others have a median survival of 22 years (which is normal lifespan for older patients). [Citation Needed]” with the following revision: “While prognosis is highly variable and dependent on various factors including these mutations, the average 5-year relative survival is 86.1%[2]
  • 2+3. Rationale for proposed change/Areas of Controversy The previous statement was vague, and without a citation for the statistics listed. In order to give a more accurate, yet concrete number, I choose to use the 5-year relative survival from the National Cancer Institute’s SEER program. This is the broadest and most reliable source of survival statistic available for CLL, and 5-year survival is one of the main statistics used to describe cancer survival rates.
  • Changing the term “subtypes” to “prognostic factors” is more accurate, as there do not appear to exist different subtypes of CLL, and the factors are what determine the prognosis for each individual. Also I used just one average number, instead of the seemingly randomly picked 6-8 and 22 years that were included previously, as this would be more useful to the lay reader.
  • SEER Cancer Stat Facts: Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. National Cancer Institute. Bethesda, MD, https://seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/html/clyl.html
  • 4. Critique of Source The source used is highly reputable, as a national source of population based cancer statistics used by the US government. This leaves little room for subjective opinions, cherry-picking studies/cohorts, and other forms of bias. The one potential source of bias is the limitation of only including statistics from the US population, but no larger international data set is available.
  • 5. Proposed improvement for the Wikipedia Talk Page We notice that the survival statistics cited in the Prognosis section has no citation, and incorrectly refers to subtypes of CLL which do not exist. We propose removing this sentence, and replace it with a 5-year relative survival statistic from the National Cancer Institute. I wish to replace the sentence “Some subtypes have a median survival of 6-8 years, while others have a median survival of 22 years (which is normal lifespan for older patients). [Citation Needed]” with the following revision: “While prognosis is highly variable and dependent on various factors including these mutations, the average 5-year relative survival is 86.1% [2]” The mutations referred to are in the previous sentences edited by another individual.

What to post on the Wikipedia article talk page?

  • This will also be covered on Nov 23rd in class. Your group should use the below template to share an outline of your proposed improvements (including your new wording and citations). Article talk pages are not places to share your assignment answers. The Wikipedia community will be more interested in viewing your exact article improvement suggestions including where you plan to improve the article (which section), what wording you suggest, and the exact citation (Note: all citations must meet WP:MEDRS)
  • You will not be able to paste citations directly from your sandbox to talk pages (unless you are interested in editing/learning Wiki-code in the "source editing" mode). We suggest re-adding your citations on the talk page manually (using the cite button and populating the citation by pasting in the DOI, website, or PMID). You will have to repeat this process yet again when you edit the actual article live.
