Kathmandu Guest House (KGH) is a heritage hotel located in the Thamel district of Kathmandu, Nepal. Established in the late 1960s, it is regarded as one of the first hotels in the area and played a significant role in transforming Thamel into a hub for international travelers.[1][2] It has since become a cultural landmark in Nepal’s tourism industry, recommended by international mountaineers and featured in global travel media.[3]
History
Kathmandu Guest House was founded by the Sakya family in the late 1960s. Sources vary on the opening year: The Kathmandu Post reports that it opened in 1968 with 13 rooms converted from a Rana-era mansion at a rate of $5 per night,[1] while Nepali Times places its establishment in 1970.[2]
By the 1970s and 1980s, the hotel became a popular stop for overland travelers along the "Hippie Trail," as well as trekkers and mountaineers headed for the Himalaya. Its location helped establish Thamel as the city’s primary tourist district.[1][2]
Architecture and Features
The property retains architectural elements of its original Rana-era mansion and is organized around the landscaped Dream Garden, often described as a quiet retreat from the bustle of Thamel.[1] In later years, the hotel incorporated spaces for art exhibitions and cultural programming.[4][5]
Cultural Role
Kathmandu Guest House has hosted numerous art shows, book launches, and performances, and is linked with the establishment of the Museum of Nepali Art (MoNA), led by members of the Shakya family.[4] These initiatives have positioned the hotel as not only an accommodation but also a center for promoting Nepali culture.
Notable Guests
According to the Hotel Association Nepal, the guest house has hosted international figures including musicians and actors.[6] International media have also highlighted the property; British mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington cited it among his recommended places in Kathmandu.[3]
Recognition and Media
Kathmandu Guest House has been featured in international travel guides and media outlets as an "institution" of Thamel and a landmark in Kathmandu tourism.[5][1][2] It continues to be referenced as one of the pioneering establishments that shaped the neighborhood’s identity.
