Notes from "Wikipedia THE MISSING MANUAL", John Broughton
p8 Use HEADING LEVELS 2, and 3. Rarely 4. Never 1, 5, 6. Use equal signs in front and behind the text. The number of signs is the level.
p9 Wikipedia:Edit summary legend abbreviations for the edit summary.
p11 Wikipedia:Purge for when an edit save doesn't display right, and refresh doesn't help.
p13 Edit lock template (the following without the tl:): {{tl:Wikipedia:Edit lock}} Asks editors not to edit for awhile. If you see this for a few hours with no edit, you can delete it. It isn't binding (ie, others can still edit).
p14,15 Types of markup:
double curly brackets are templates; double square brackets are an internal link.
words1|words2 inside double square brackets is a piped link. words1 is the actual page name, words2 is what the reader sees.
single square brackets around a URL are external links.
text possibly with a URL between ref and /ref inside less than greater than characters (I'll call this LG) and references / inside LG are for footnotes.
like the above, but other words than ref: blockquote text /blockquote, and math numbers and symbols /math.
A comment that is visible only in edit mode goes between less than!-- and --greater than.
tables are created by lots of stuff separated by pipe symbols inside single curly brackets.
lists are created by * (bullet) and # (numbered).
Category:Name inside double square brackets creates a category link at the bottom of the page.
To create citation needed [citation needed] For info, see Template:Citation needed.
p23 Finding a known problem to work on: WP:PNA; WP:RFE; CAT:UP; CAT:M.
p24 Be careful about spelling: WP:SPELLING; WP:ENGVAR.
p25 Check WP:Alternative outlets when an article is not appropriate for Wikipedia.
p27 Citation not needed for:
- In the lead section, which should be a concise overview;
- In a section that summarizes a more detailed article. Put a link just below the heading like this: Main article: Link-to-main-article.
- There's an internal link to another article that supports what you say;
- If the info is documented in a section at the bottom, eg, if a book in a bibliography is documentation for the info. p29: But you must add a citation for controversial text.
p32 Three ways to cite sources:
- Embedded citations (see WP:ECITE)
- Footnotes (see WP:FOOT, Help:Footnotes, and Pickleball)
- Harvard referencing (see WP:Harvard referencing)
p42 For books: Special:Booksources and for multiple references to the same source, add a citation template for page numbers: Template:Rp.
