At the time of European contact, it was believed that there were 600 to 1200[1] Nicolenos present on the island. Russian and Aleut hunters frequently skirmished with the native Nicolenos, reducing those numbers. The last Nicoleno, also known as the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island, was removed from the island in 1853.

According to radiocarbon dating San Nicolas Island has been occupied since at least 6500 B.C.E. during the early Holocene[2]. The island saw an increase in population and occupation during the middle Holocene, coinciding with new advancements in fishing technology. The population of the island continued to fluctuate greatly in relation to changing climate and subsistence patterns.

Nicoleno burial sites give us insight on the religious beliefs of the island natives. Dogs, tools, and various religious paraphernalia can be found buried alongside each other. Mortar and pestles can be found destroyed or “killed” in burials. Soot residue found in such objects is like the puberty rites of boys throughout southern California.[3]
