JC Cox was born October 8th 1968 in Dallas, Texas. JC moved to Longview, Texas at the age of 8 years old. He became interested in the Martial Arts as a young boy and began his first formal training at a small Kung Fu school in Longview. Having trained for only 9 months JC stopped only to later begin again at a local Tae Kwon Do school. This training was more intense, and being taught by a Native Korean Instructor exposed him to a much different method of training and much different way of thinking as a martial artist. By 1985, JC had been training for sometime, but still felt a void and began to search for other schools. He stopped in a Local Tang Soo Do school. Tang Soo Do had been made famous by Chuck Norris (Black Belt Number 2819) [1]in the 70s for its effectiveness in Kick Boxing. JC signed up under instructor Kris Poole (Black Belt Number 20632) who had been training since 1972. This relationship would last until 2008. The Tang Soo Do school was associated with the Moo Duk Kwan Organization in Korea and was still being led by its founder Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee[2]. JC received his Black Belt in Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan in 1991 and was give his sequential (Black Belt number 30325), having completed in hundreds of point style karate tournaments. JC decided to test himself as a Kickboxer, At this time MMA did not exsist in the United States and there were few promotions being ran. JC signed with PKA [3]as a professional with no sactioned amatuer career in full contact. JC fought 3 professional fights, winning all three by TKO. Having tested himself in the Full Contact arena JC continued to train in Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan, which would later become known as Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. [4]. In 1992 JC received his 2nd degree Black Belt and his instructors certification to teach Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. Later that same year JC opened his first DO-jang or school and began to teach and promote students. It was during this time JC began to get interested in grappling. This interest was increased following the debut of the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993.In 1995 JC was ask to represent the US in Korea as part of a celebration and Goodwill demonstration. The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Moo Duk Kwan in Korea. After returning from Korea JC was tested and promoted to 3rd Degree Black Belt in 1996. He continued to compete at a National level winning tournaments all over the USA, from New York to Las Veges to California to Florida. In 2000 JC was invited to test at the Ko Dan Ja in the elevation of the Colorodo Rocky Mountians. This test was for his 4th degree black belt and for the certification of master lever teacher (SA BOM) in the Moo Duk Kwan. After 8 days of testing, JC pasted these tests and was promoted. The next 5 years, JCs school grew and he expanded into a mcuh larger facility. Having the space and the student base JC began to teach some of the grappling techniques he had been training on separately from the traditional Korean style of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan and also got involved in the newly developing MMA scene. JC's school began to evolve as MMA began to get more popular. Recognizing the need for more formal training in grappling JC called the Gracie Academy in Torence, California and set up an appointment to go train with the legendary Gracie Family [5] in 2005 JC was again invited to represent the US in Korea 10 years later at the 60th aniversary of the Moo Duk Kwan in Korea. Returning from Korea, JC was invited to test once again at the Ko Dan Ja. This time the 8 day test was held in the mountains of California. Completing the test JC was promoted to 5th degree Black Belt in Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan by HC Hwang [6] . Following this promotion JC continued to pursue Jiujitsu / MMA and cross training while maintaining a full time Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan school. Training with Rener Gracie [7] at the Graice Academy. JC invited Rener to Longview and deveolped a relationship that would result in JC getting his first offical jiujitsu rank promotion to Blue Belt. Later JC, flew to California to participate in the first Gracie sponcerd Combative Training for instructors, and was awarded certification to teach Gracie Jiujitsu by Rorion, Renner and Ryron Gracie. The school was now evolving into a mixed martial arts gym and was losing some of the traditional feel it had as a Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Do-Jang. JC began to train fighters and participated in MMA promotions as a certified Gracie Jiujitsu school. JC met Jorge Gurgel in 2007 at a Lousiana MMA show, and developed a relationship that would later become student and instructor. JC switched his affiliation from the Gracie Academy to Jorge Gurgel and currently teaches as a Jorge Gurgel Affiliate [8] currently JC is coaching both Professional and Amature MMA Fighters and continues to compete in grappling competitions around the country winning the advanced Purple/Brown NAGA title in 2011 at 199lbs.
