The New York City Anti-Violence Project
"The New York City Anti-Violence Project" (NYC AVP) is a New York State non-profit organization devoted to eradicate hate violence, sexual assault and domestic violence against LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities providing counseling, advocacy, organizing, and public education. The headquarters is located New York City.
History
The New York City Anti-Violence Project was founded in 1980 in response to local incidents of anti-LGBT violence and the failure of the criminal legal system to address safety issues and proceed according to the Bias-motivated crimes.
Until 1984, when the first full-time Executive Director was hired NYC AVP was an all-volunteer association. With the addition of full-time staff the organization was able to expand its services to provide professional counseling to victims and survivors of hate violence; also began expanding their work beyond bias-motivated violence.

NYC AVP provides free and confidential assistance to LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities from all Five Boroughs of New York City.
Pursuant to the LGBTQ Equal Rights, to transform public attitudes that encourage and condone hate-motivated violence and to promote public policies designed to prevent such violence, NYC Anti-violence Project works with the larger community through efforts to educate the general public, law enforcement, health care professionals, school-based staff, and social service agency personnel on violence issues impacting LGBTQ communities and hold all society members accountable to their obligation for fair and just treatment of LGBTQ people. By calling attention to discriminatory and re-victimizing responses the organization attempt is focused to obtain reform on government policies and practices.
Services
The NYC AVP works to end violence in all its forms against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-affected communities. Firstly, it works for survivors by offering free and confidential support to victims of bias violence, sexual assault, domestic violence, pick-up crimes, police misconduct, and HIV-related violence. Services like short-term and long-term individual counseling as well advocacy and referrals are available. A second, AVP initiative is working against violence, it works to change public attitudes that lead to violence against LGBTQH people. It documents violence (physical and non-physical) and participates in community activism. Thirdly, AVP works to bridge the gap between the NYPD and LGBTQ New Yorkers. Finally, AVP trains law enforcement officials, rape crisis centers, domestic violence agencies, hospitals, schools, clinics, and community centers about the needs of LGBTQ people.
Campaign
AVP’s most prominent campaign of late is the “I’m Anti-Violence” photo campaign. This campaign aims to invite anyone who is for ending violence in all its forms against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered people, to take a photo and e-mail it to AVP. The staff then post the photos as part of a continuous photo slide with other contributors, on their website. This campaign is occurring concurrently with the same theme on NYC buses, subways, and in the media.

The NYC AVP publishes the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), has media releases, and puts out recent statements and community alerts. Some examples of publications include:
