List of Current Donegal Slang

This is a list of Current Donegal Slang. These phrases or words are currently used, their meaning is not often understood, or their usage causes the speaker to appear old or outdated. This differs from the List of archaic Irish words and their modern equivalents in that these phrases or words are considered colloquial. Very often slang can become part of the accepted language, but usually these phrases come and go from generation to generation.

Tins - Alcoholic beverage

Tins of beer - a further alcoholic beverage

Beered - Intoxicated

Reek/That Sweet Mary Jane/Lady Jane/Sweet Baby Kush/Ganj - Marijuana

Beaner - a man/woman of lower or slightly stunted intelligence, especially on a night out i.e. Conal (*note there are many forms of beaner)

Jazz Baby - Contemporary Song

Brendan McGlynn - Local Hero

A "Nom" - a name slated for a female that is one engaged when one is intoxicated

Shifting - Kissing another human

"Were not in a relationship" - A poor excuse often used by couples in denial
